Electronic Press Kit: Private Mind

Bio

Although Private Mind boasts members of Long Island Hardcore acts such as High Reach, Warehouse, Detriment, and Ennui, their musical style scratches an entirely different itch; difficult to label in specifics and best described as, simply, ‘post-hardcore.’ The driving rhythms in the music are wrapped in dynamic guitars, yet complemented by the catchy, radio-friendly choruses vocalized by singer/guitarist Dan Alivio. At the core the music is a clear nod to post-hardcore innovators of the 1990’s a‵ la Quicksand, Jawbox and Fugazi; but at times the overall impression leans more emo, like Elliott and Jimmy Eat World. Private Mind still considers themselves a Hardcore Punk band in spirit but they cannot be put into a box and it is their intent to transcend the confines of any particular genre or movement.

Forming sometime around 2018 as a side project of Warehouse, it was not until December 2020 that Private Mind released their debut self-titled EP on Streetfight Records, under their former alias Yesduke. While writing and recording new music, Private Mind continues to play locally and regionally in support of their self-titled EP which was recently reissued on Static Era Records.

Private Mind is Dan Alivio (vocals/guitar), Kenny Lopez (guitar), Mike Varley (bass) and Sal Manaro (drums).

"Upon writing new music around 2018 we realized it didn’t really fit what Warehouse is about. I always wanted to do more of a melodic hardcore band in the sense anyway, So we decided to start a new group and had Dan move to vocals as well. It was just the three of us the 3 of us that wrote the demo."

"I initially got into music from my Uncle Tony. He gave me my first drum set and showed me many rock and metal bands from his era when I was a kid. I was hooked. It wasn’t until middle school my neighbor Mike who was a few years older than me, he was fully engulfed in the Long Island hardcore scene at the time. He gave me a stack of CDs that ultimately ended up changing my outlook on music and many things--finding out about local shows shortly after."

“‘Strangers’ is about the desire to experience the things you enjoy doing for the first time again, in times when depression seems to drain the excitement out of them”

"The classic late '90s / early 2000s Long Island emo sound has been back in a big way thanks to modern-day LI torch-carriers like Koyo and Stand Still, and if you're into that kinda stuff, another band you need on your radar is Private Mind. They share members with LIHC bands Warehouse, Hangman, Detriment, and Ennui, and they cite hometown influences like Silent Majority and On the Might of Princes. You can definitely hear that coming through in their 2020 debut self-titled EP, which is about to be re-released by Static Era Records along with the new song "Strangers," which premieres in this post.

"We are slowly, but surely growing into a sound that is familiar yet pushes us to step out of our comfort zone."
